Technical Application | Crane & Lifting Systems

Strategic Alliances supported a recent crane instrumentation application on an ADNOC offshore vessel, using PR Electronics – PR 3103 Universal Signal Converter. Crane and lifting systems operate in high-EMI environments due to VFD-driven motors, contactors, braking systems, and long cable routes. These conditions often introduce ground loops, signal distortion, and transient interference, directly affecting PLC analog input stability and system reliability.

The PR 3103 was applied to provide galvanic isolation and signal conditioning between field instrumentation and the PLC, ensuring accurate and noise-free signal transmission under harsh operating conditions.

Typical signal architecture:

Field Instrument → PR 3103 (Isolation & Conditioning) → 4–20 mA / 0–10 V → PLC Analog Input

Technical benefits in crane applications:

  • Galvanic isolation to eliminate ground loop effects
  • High immunity to EMI and transient disturbances
  • Protection of PLC analog I/O from voltage spikes and noise coupling
  • Improved signal stability for control and monitoring functions
  • Increased system availability in continuous-duty lifting operations

This implementation supports reliable crane operation, reduced nuisance faults, and improved control system robustness in heavy-duty industrial environments.
